First Responders Day

Today is National First Responders Day!

As the name suggests, this is the day to honor the men and women who act quickly when an emergency is at hand. First responders dedicate their lives to helping others Who are they? These are EMTs, paramedics, firefighters and police – and run toward a crisis while everyone else is covering their behind.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, 4.6-million career and volunteer first responders support the communities where they live. In an emergency, these dedicated professionals often putting their own lives on the line. And more than that? They don’t ask to be honored – and will often tell you they’re “just doing their job.”

As one of the most dangerous jobs in the country, the day also pays tribute to the fallen first responders. According to the CDC, 97 firefighters and 155 police officers die each year in the line of duty on average. Not surprisingly, their rate of occupational injury is higher than the national average. Their families know the price they pay for their dedication to the job. And considering the number of TV shows about them...you should, too!
